Girls’ day out!

My 10-year-old daughter and I hit the town last Saturday. We enjoyed an afternoon at the opening performance of La Cenerentola at the Playhouse Theatre.

In this family friendly opera, the classic Cinderella story features Cenerentola in an enchanting love story where she meets her Prince Charming.

To be honest, this was the first opera either of us have attended. I wasn’t sure what to expect. Would it be too sophisticated for my pop music-obsessed girl? A teary Pretty Woman moment for myself?

I’m happy to report that both of us were delightfully surprised. The music was simply stunning. The funny characters – including the goofy step-sisters, the less than kind step-father, the prince and valet who traded roles – kept us thoroughly entertained.

My daughter and I both agreed — the music was outstanding and the performances were equally as good. It was so nice to see her having a new experience (and, not to mention, enjoying every moment of the show at the same time).

I’d be remiss not to sing the praises of Cenerentola, played by the incredibly talented Simone McIntosh (a Vancouver native!). That girl can sing!

Sung in Italian with English surtitles projected above the stage, this magical journey from rags to riches will sweep you and yours away.

We were so pleased to attend La Cenerentola on the opening day. Vancouver Opera Festival is featuring two operas (also including Faust) plus dozens of events from April 27 – May 5, 2019.
