Fall brings cool days, changing leaves, and everyone’s favourite fruit – apples! The apple-picking season is officially here. From early September until the end of October, head out to a local farm to pick your own bushel, hit up a farmers’ market for already-picked varieties, or join in on an awesome family-friendly apple themed event! There’s a whole bunch happening in Metro Vancouver and beyond.
U-Pick Apple Farms
Taves Family Farms
Open daily, 9 am – 5:30 pm, 333 Gladwin Road, Abbotsford
The U-Pick orchards at Taves Family Farms feature more than 12 varieties of non-GMO apples, like Ambrosi, Gala, and Honeycrisp. Make sure to check out their u-pick page on their website to see what’s ripe for picking! After you pick out your apples, visit Bunny Town, choose the perfect pumpkin, navigate the Corn Quest Maze, ride the tire swings, bounce on jumping pillows, pet barn animals, shoot a pumpkin from the pumpkin cannon, sample freshly pressed apple cider, and much more. It’s fall fun at its finest!
Willow View Farms
Open Monday – Saturday, 9 am – 5:30 pm & Sundays, 11 am – 5:30 pm, 288 McCallum Road, Abbotsford
Willow View Farms grows a wide variety of apples from Fuji’s to Northern Spy, each type ripens at a different time, so there’s always something ready to pick! Make sure you pick up your map of the best picking rows (they update this daily) and to grab a picking bag if you forgot yours at home. Hayrides through the orchard are available on the last two weekends of September and throughout October. There’s a petting zoo to visit too!
Heritage Apple Day

Sample a variety of apples, try your hand at old-fashioned chores and enjoy fiddlers, artists, and historians. Meet at the Heritage Area. Free for all ages! Drop by anytime.
Apple Fest at Bruce’s Country Market
Saturday, September 29th – Sunday, September 30th, 10 am – 5 pm, Bruce’s Country Market, 23963 Lougheed Hwy, Maple Ridge
Head out to Bruce’s Country Market in Maple Ridge for their annual Apple Fest! During the weeks prior to the festival, the family scours the province for new and exciting varieties of apples, as well as heirloom and organic apples. Then dozens and dozens of different apple varieties are gathered together in the apple tent and the fun begins. Taste apples and see if you can guess the variety in the Apple ID Contest. Purchase an amazing selection of apples and stock up from their case lot sale. There will be cotton candy, popcorn, apple crisp, ice cream, and free coffee! Several favourite vendors will have sampling tables. It’s a delicious and fun event for the whole family.
New West Apple Press Fest Vol. 3

UBC Botanical Garden Apple Festival

A family event for all ages, the UBC Apple Festival celebrates one of BC’s favourite fruits. From learning about the diversity of apples to tasting rare and unusual varieties, the Apple Festival is a great opportunity to discover more about this delicious fruit. Cost: $5 for adults, kids under 12 are free.

Salmon Arm’s Apple Fest
Saturday, September 29th, 10 am – 4 pm, Ross Street Plaza, Salmon Arm
Downtown Salmon Arm & Askew’s are hosting the 4th Annual Apple Fest at the Ross Street Plaza. This free community event is a celebration of Salmon Arm’s agricultural background and will showcase local apple vendors selling everything from apple pies to fresh picked apples. The Mobile Juice Factory will also be attending so that people may bring their own apples to be juiced. Local artisans, community groups and businesses will be showcasing their products and services. Full of family fun and entertainment, Apple Fest is not to be missed!
Bowen Island Applefest 2018

Hop on a ferry and head to Bowen Island for the Bowen Heritage Annual Applefest. Applefest is a celebration of the humble fruit and you’ll find all sorts of delicious goodies to enjoy – including homemade apple pie! This fun family-friendly free event is a great activity for Thanksgiving Sunday. There will be a tea room, a heritage apple display of over 100 different varieties, farmers’ market, baked goods, music, best apple-pie contest, activities and park interpretations.
The 19th Annual Salt Spring Island Apple Festival
Sunday, September 30th, 9 am – 5 pm, Salt Spring Island
A chance to visit Apple Heaven while still on earth! Salt Spring Island, BC grows over 450 varieties of apples organically, with an apple history dating back to 1860. At 9 am on Sunday, September 30th, the Apple Festival map is released and the fun begins! Then head to one (or more) of 20 farms participating in the Festival. Pick your favourite, try a new variety, and have some fun! $10 per adult, $5 per student and kids are free!
