October is here and so are some great family-friendly activities. We love this month for all the spooky fun it brings, but if you are looking for some family activities that are not related to Halloween, we’ve got you covered! There’s a cranberry festival, a harvest moon festival, and an apple festival too. Plus there’s a ton of great expos and exhibitions on everything from rocks and gems to pets. You can sing-along to Grease, or with Fred Penner. There’s free movies, a hobby and toy show, and a Turkey Trot too. Take a look at our round up and start planning some memorable family fun. Festivals & Fairs

Cranberry Festival
Saturday, October 7th, 10 am – 4 pm, Glover Road, Fort Langley
The Cranberry Festival is held each year on the Saturday of the Thanksgiving weekend in the heart of historic Fort Langley. Join in and celebrate the harvest and history of the cranberry in Fort Langley. Enjoy cool, unique vendors, free entertainment, pancake breakfast, and family activities for everyone It’s always a great day in the centre of Fort Langley. When you are done visiting the vendors, head over to the Fort Langley National Historic Site (free entry this year!) for all sorts of cranberry fun!

Harvest Full Moon Festival
Saturday, October 7th, 6 pm – 8:30 pm, City Centre Community Centre, 5900 Minoru Blvd, Richmond, Cost: Free
It’s time for City Centre’s 3rd Annual Harvest Full Moon Festival. Enjoy activities, entertainment, and a procession. Complimentary mooncakes and tea will be served. All ages are welcome, but children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult. For more details, contact our front desk at 604-204-8588. This event is for All Ages. 26th Annual Apple Festival 2017
Saturday, October 14th – Sunday, October 15th, UBC Botanical Gardens, 6804 SW Marine Drive, Vancouver, Cost: $5 – Adults; Kids 12 and under are free.
A family event for all ages, the UBC Apple Festival celebrates one of BC’s favourite fruits. From learning about the diversity of apples to tasting rare and unusual varieties, the Apple Festival is a great opportunity to discover more about this delicious fruit.

Fraser Valley Hobby and Toy Show

Welcome to the Fraser Valley’s ultimate hobby and toy show! This year you will find, comics, die-cast cars, models, pop culture, and vintage toys. This two-storey show has over 50 vendor tables!

Pacific Pet Expo
Saturday, October 21st – Sunday, October 22nd, Cloverdale Agriplex, 17798 62 Avenue, Surrey
A Pet Expo for the entire family including your pet! Admission paid at the door. $10.00 each. 13 and under are free. There will be lots of vendors with awesome pet products. There’s a dog lure course, llamas to meet, exotic birds to say hello to, leash-free fun for dogs and a basset hound race too! Learn about reptiles or enter your furry friend into the Best Dressed Pet contest to win a fantastic prize! Port Moody Rock & Gem Show
Saturday, October 28th – Sunday, October 29th, Kyle Centre, 125 Kyle Street, Port Moody
This year the Gem and Mineral Show titled, “150 Rocks – Celebrating Canada through our Rocks and Minerals”, will be taking place October 28th and 29th at Kyle Centre in Port Moody. The 2017 show will celebrate Canada’s sesquicentennial and feature a display of 150 Rocks from across the country and their stories.

Vancouver Baby & Family Fair
Saturday, October 28th – Sunday, October 29th, Vancouver Convention Centre East, 1055 Canada Place, Vancouver
From learning about safe stem cell storage and the importance of it to how to easily integrate cooking healthy meals with your kids even when it seems like the schedule won’t allow for it, the 16th annual Vancouver Baby & Family Fair is bursting with new educational presentations, a kid-star-studded entertainment line-up and opportunities for kids, parents and those who love them to celebrate families. On October 28 and 29, the Vancouver Convention Centre East Facility Hall C will come alive with entertainers who include none-other than kid favorites Bob the Builder and Paw Patrol. Fair attendees can take part in interactive displays, shop the best in household necessities and family must-haves and listen to a wide range of speakers who are both informative and entertaining.

Granville Island Turkey Trot

This fall signature event in support of the Greater Vancouver Food Bank returns once again with runs for kids and adults, food, drinks, and entertainment. Sunday is the kids run and Monday is the 10K!

Thanksgiving Toonie Skate

VSO Kids’ Koncerts: Fred Penner

Fred Penner, a Canadian icon of entertainment and inspiration for children and families, makes his long-awaited return to the VSO! Kids’ Koncerts are designed for children four to eleven years of age and their families in five fun and educational musical presentations. The KIDS’ KONCERTS series features the full orchestra and the very best in children’s musical entertainers. 

Community Day: Free Movies at Cineplex Theatres
Saturday, October 14th, 9 am – 11 am, various Cineplex theatres throughout Metro Vancouver
Cineplex Theatres celebrate Community Day with a select number of free films and discounted concessions on October 14th. Tickets are available in person on the day on a first-come, first-served basis. 

Sing-a-Long GREASE
Thursday, October 19th, 7 pm, Massey Theatre, 735 8th Avenue, New Westminster
Have you ever been to a film musical and had the uncontrollable urge to burst into song? Ever wanted to know what it’s like to be a T-bird or a Pink Lady but never had the occasion to do so? Well, now is your chance to don those pink jackets, grease up those quaffs, and let your inhibitions go for an evening where YOU are the star. Royal City Musical Theatre and the Arts Council of New Westminster present Sing-a-long-a Grease! After the great success of Sing-a-long-a Sound of Music last year, they are giving you the one that you want (ooo-ooo-oo). This event is a fundraiser for both organizations. Local personality (and yoyomama contributor!) Erin Jeffery is hosting this event and there will be a costume contest with prizes!

Place des Arts: Family Day & Concert
Sunday, October 29th, 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm, Place des Arts, 1120 Brunette Avenue, Coquitlam
Gather up the family and tour four exhibitions by local artists. Then dive into four exhibition-related art activities and create your own masterpieces! Finish up your day with for Mr. I’s Slightly Spooky Songs & Stories Concert at 3 pm, perfect for getting wee ones (and the rest of us) in the mood for haunting! Admission to Family Day is free; Reserve your spot for Family Day and purchase optional tickets to Mr. I’s concert ($10.00 per person).
