Happy almost Mother’s Day! It’s quite possibly our favourite day of the year, the day that celebrates mamas and all they do. If you have a mom in your life that you want to celebrate with or maybe you are a mama looking to give your family some hints on how to celebrate you, this list provides great options for a day of meaningful, quality family time, mom’s favourite thing! With these ideas you’ll create lasting memories through fun family experiences the whole gang can enjoy.
Here are five perfect ideas on how to spend a lovely and memorable day with mom and Mother’s Day.
Plant a Tree
What better way to show mom how much you care than by spending the day in the garden together taking care of Mother Earth. Plant a tree or a perennial, something that will last a long time. Every time mom sees the plant she will be reminded of the fun day you had together working in the garden. Don’t have a garden? Plant a tree in a pot instead. Here’s a great list of trees and plants that do well in pots.
Have a Picnic
Pack a delicious picnic lunch and head to your local park. Bring along a blanket, a ball to play catch or soccer, and something yummy to drink. Our favourite things to pack for a delicious and simple picnic lunch include fresh fruit, crackers and cheese, cured meats, and trail mix. Basically anything that is easy to nibble on between playing and having fun! If you are looking for something a little fancier, a local chef gave us his tips on picnicking including a delicious recipe for summer layered salad. Not sure where to take your picnic basket? Here’s a great list of parks in Metro Vancouver to choose from.
Explore a Farmer’s Market
Summer farmer’s markets are opening up all over Metro Vancouver are a wonderful way to spend Mother’s Day together. Help mom pick out some delicious, fresh produce and beautiful flowers. Treat her to a special locally made pastry and make sure she gets that handmade goats milk soap she has had her eye on. Then when everyone gets home, send mom off to relax and create a delicious meal from your farmer’s market bounty. In need of a tasty recipe? We have a giant list of delicious spring recipes to help you make the most of your fresh produce from the market.
Enjoy High Tea at Home
Make your own fancy sandwiches, grab a special tea blend from your favourite tea merchant and treat mom to high tea in the comfort of your own home. Have everyone don their Sunday best and enjoy the tea together as a family. Kids can sip apple juice or a fruity caffeine-free tea. Make crust-less nutbutter and jam sandwiches for the little ones. Get the whole family involved in making the sandwiches. The littlest ones can help put the ingredients in a bowl, or use cookie cutters on sandwiches to make them extra-special. Sandwiches can be made a day in advance so Mother’s Day can be all about mom and not about food prep.
Something as simple as a bike ride, hike or walk can be the perfect family together time mom is looking for on Mother’s Day. You can explore a new neighbourhood or get more familiar with your own backyard. Plan out a route or let your feet or wheels be your guide. It’s up to you! Or, if mom likes to be involved in planning, give her a few choices of where to go and how to get around. While you are walking or biking, a rousing game of eye-spy can make the outing even more memorable.
After a day full of fun with the family, mom may be craving a bit of alone so, as a special treat, draw her a bath and surprise her with some homemade bath bombs, her favourite book and some peace and quiet.
