Podcasts are a fantastic way to pass time. They are great for road trips, for the wind-down time before bed, or for that period of time when dinner isn’t quite ready, and the kids are bouncing off the walls looking for something to do. Here are a few of our favourite podcasts for kids that also happen to be equally entertaining for adults. Our list covers educational podcasts, storytelling podcasts, and even a meditation podcast, just for kids!
Brains On! is an awesome podcast for curious kids. This science-based podcast features kids as guest-hosts and a delightful array of characters, from bacteria to water droplets to left-handed mutant snails. We highly recommend starting with the Fart Smarts episode, all about understanding the gas we pass. While our kids got a kick out of hearing the word ‘fart’ on the radio, they also learned a ton about bacteria and the way their bodies work. Each episode also features a mystery sound that’s really fun to try and figure out. Great for elementary school aged kids. brainson.org
Honorable mention: Smash Boom Best; a debate show for kids and families from the makers of Brains On! Every episode takes two cool things, smashes them together and lets you decide which is best. Cats versus Dogs. Pizza versus Tacos. Super Speed versus Super Strength.
Hosts Mindy Thomas and Guy Raz guide curious kids and their grown-ups on a journey into the wonders of the world around them. Explore the Who, What, When, Where, Why, How, and Wow in the World of just about everything – dandruff, black holes, flying taxis, and more. The best way to dive into Wow in the World is to scroll through their list of episodes and pick one that matches your kid’s interests. That’s a sure-fire way to get them hooked! Ideal for preschool to elementary school-aged kids. tinkercast.com/shows/wow-in-the-world/
Join Earth Ranger Emma, a wildlife biologist and roaming reporter for the Earth Rangers podcast, a show for everyone who loves to explore the mysteries of nature. Follow along as Emma explores the deep jungle, the frozen Arctic, and splashes around in some wetlands, all in the name of science. This is a brand new podcast with only 6 episodes out so far, so start with Episode 1: Polar Bear Fur, and Birds with Flippers. It’s a listen great for kids of all ages interested in animals and nature. Yet another reason to love this podcast – it’s Canadian! earthrangers.com/wildwire/podcast/
If you are looking for a new bedtime wind-down routine, you must give Peace Out a listen. It’s guided meditation and relaxation for kids. Each episode is a relaxation story, told with guided breathing prompts. Kids get right into the story aspect and will follow happily along with the breathing exercises and imaginative visualizations (a magical majestic beautiful unicorn with a rainbow mane, or a goofy monkey hopping on your belly). With the twinkly music and soothing voice of host, Chanel Tsang, you’ll relax right alongside your kiddos! Ideal for ages 3 – 10. If you aren’t sure this is right for your kids, start with one of the shorter episodes, like The Little Monkey, or Unicorn, to see how they fair. Peace out and peace within. bedtime.fm/peaceout
Brought to you by the same producer as Peace Out, Story Time is a free audiobook series for kids focusing on bedtime stories. These 10 – 15-minute stories are the perfect way to end the day and lull your little one to sleep. There’s a new episode released every two weeks, so there’s a huge library of stories to choose from. Great for little ones to elementary aged kids and anyone else who loves a good bedtime story. Looking for a good place to start? We love the stories about Poppy and the Magic Pen and The Dragon Under the Stairs. bedtime.fm/storytime
The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian is a serialized science-fiction story for kids, told in 15-20 minute episodes. The story follows Finn Caspian, an 8-year-old boy aboard The Famous Marlowe 280 Interplanetary Exploratory Space Station. He and his friends Abigail, Elias and Vale are Explorers Troop 301, taking off from the Marlowe to explore uncharted planets, help the occasional alien, and solve a mystery or two. Think Scooby-Do and gang for the Generation Alpha set. Make sure you start with Episode 1, as that’s where the story of Finn begins! This is our favourite podcast to binge-listen to while on family road trips. finncaspian.com
