Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 13th, and if you haven’t got a reservation at her favourite brunch spot, you may be hard-pressed to snag a table now. But, don’t fret! We’ve got 6 awesome ideas for Mother’s Day fun – none of which require reservations at a busy restaurant, and all get the entire family out of the house to enjoy a lovely, spring day.

Go on a hike

If mom likes to get outdoors and be active, a hike is a great way to celebrate Mother’s Day together as a family. Pack a few tasty snacks and hit the trails. Not sure where to go? Take a look at these 5 spots to hike with kids in Metro Vancouver. We’ve included some helpful tips to make the day a success for the whole family.

Take a family bike ride

Another option to celebrate active moms on Mother’s Day is to head out on a bike ride. Get the bikes out of storage a few days before Sunday, dust them off, pump up the tires, and make sure everyone’s helmets fit. Then plan your day – take a look at the best bike rides for Metro Vancouver families, a list curated by Colleen MacDonald of Let’s Go Biking – the Lower Mainland’s authority on awesome bike trails. She also provides helpful hints on how to make sure everyone has a good time, even the littlest ones in your bike gang.

Host a DIY tea party

We love a good tea party and we bet the mama’s in your life do too, even more so when it’s made and served by little hands. Brew up a pot of mom’s favourite tea or coffee, and help the kiddo’s make finger sandwiches. Cut off the crusts for an authentic high tea experience. Take a look at our Mother’s Day Tea DIY for some more helpful hints and recipes.

Plant some flowers

A day spent in the garden is a great one in our books, especially if we get help from our family! May is the perfect time to plant up a container or add some new perennials to your garden bed. Choose a pretty plant that will come back year after year for a fun reminder of a special Mother’s Day spent together in the garden. Here are some helpful hints and tips on how to garden with kids. And here are some container gardening tips – a great way to add colour to smaller spaces.

Enjoy a family picnic

Gather some of mom’s favourite treats and snacks, put them in a cooler, and head to your local park for an awesome picnic lunch. Bring along a Frisbee or a ball to toss around and enjoy the day together as a family. A few hours spent relaxing and playing together is a wonderful way to celebrate Mother’s Day. Here are some picnic tips from local celebrity chef, Trevor Bird of Fable Kitchen, plus an awesome recipe for a tasty and transportable salad.

Explore a farmers’ market

Spring Farmers’ Markets are now on – many opening for the first market of the season this weekend. One year for Mother’s Day, we spent a leisurely morning perusing the stalls at our local market, selecting delicious fruit and vegetables, snacking on tasty samples, and getting surprised with a lovely handmade necklace as a gift from our kids. It was one of our favourite days! Take a look at our Complete List of Farmers’ Markets in Metro Vancouver (and beyond) for a full listing of all the market dates and hours.
